Invitation

HomeGalleryArtist ProfilesStatement

[The invitation period is now closed.]

In the spirit of reciprocity and with the modest hope of generating small surprises and unexpected exchanges, you are cordially invited to submit a work or artist’s multiple to an invitational mail art swap among international artists. I find your work wonderfully idiosyncratic, conceptually rigorous, humorous, compellingly demonstrative of thingness, and/or quite possibly astounding. I would be honored if you could participate. The Grand-Touring, virtual, poststudio possibilities in art practice today may make the mail art swap seem humble and antiquated, yet its premise remains vital: artists create networks and shape the art world(s) we would like to participate in. This & That is a grassroots exchange by artists for artists. With experimental/conceptual/installation/new media artists like you, the possibilities are positively expansive.

What you contribute:

1. The form. Download a PDF (220 kb) or Microsoft Word DOC (64 kb).

2. A work. Media: May be an original work of art, a multiple, print, drawing, artist’s book, limited edition poster, a small sculpture, DVD or CD.* Size & Weight: Must fit in a 9 x 12 inch (22.8 x 30.4 cm) envelope and weigh under 2 pounds /1 kg). Value: As a general guideline, I’d recommend work valued at $25-150 USD/£15–100.

3. Return postage.** US-based artists, submit a 9x12 inch SASE with a $4.95 Priority Mail stamp OR a $6 Paypal payment. International artists, please submit $15USD via Paypal.

What you get:

1. A work. You’ll have an opportunity to vote for your top swap picks (votes will be considered, but please assume no guarantees).

2. Exhibition of your submission in Involved, Socially from August 7–September 6, 2009 at Triple Base Gallery, in San Francisco, California, USA.

3. An online forum. All submissions and resulting swaps will be documented on
mailartswap.christinewongyap.com, with an associated blog for comments.

How to participate:

Step 1. Email the form by July 15, 2009 to cwy(at)christinewongyap.com.

Step 2. Mail your artwork, a print-out of the completed two-page form, and your SASE (or submit a Paypal payment below) to be received no later than August 1, 2009. Please write “DO NOT BEND” on the envelope. Need the address? Email cwy(at)christinewongyap.com.

*About new media: Due to technical limitations, DVDs and CDs may not be installed in the gallery or posted to the site.
**As a voluntary, artist-initiated project to be exhibited in a project space devoted to experimental art, This & That regrets that it hasn't any funds to offset shipping costs.

Insurance is not provided; provide your own if needed. No refunds or returns. All swap decisions final. There will be no compensation, aside from passing regret, should your submission or swapped art get lost in the mail. If you desire confirmation or tracking on either the shipping of your work to its swap recipient, or of the swapped art you will receive, you must submit additional funds, to be determined in collaboration with the curator. By participating in This and That International Mail Art Swap, you are waiving your right to hold Triple Base Gallery and Christine Wong Yap accountable for any dissatisfaction, anxiety, damage or loss of your art, or inappropriate art or emotions that may result from this exchange. Cheers!
